Influence of Twin-Roll Casting Speed on Microstructural Homogeneity, Centerline Segregation, and Surface Quality of Three Different Mg Alloys

Abstract In this work, the influence of twin-roll casting (TRC) speed on microstructure through-thickness uniformity, centerline segregation, and surface quality three wrought Mg alloys was investigated. The microstructural features AZ31, ZX11, ZWK200 produced at TRC speeds ranging from 1.8 m/min to 2.2 (for AZ31 ZWK200), 1.5–2.5 ZX11 alloy) were analyzed. There clear differences in uniformity depending alloy composition. Columnar grains coexisting with globular found alloys, whereas showed a homogeneous fine-grained characterized by weaker texture even highest used. While there is tendency reduce segregation as decreased during alloy, formation defect cannot be prevented only varying speed.
